Niš is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans, and the city has some unique attractions to offer to the tourists. The Niš fortress was built by the Turks in the middle of the 17th century, in the  site of an ancient Roman fortified camp at the Nišava riverbank. The Niš fortress had a seven-sided basis, with five bastions, also with a mosque, sections of the hamam and a weapons dumb, which is today transformed into an exhibition gallery.

The city consists of 3 districts: Novi Beograd, which is the modern part of the city and the central shopping area; Zemun, which was originally an independent settlement, later joined to Belgrade; and Stari Grad, the old part of the city. The last, located on the opposite side of the Sava, is known for its cobble-stone streets, charming restaurants and Belgrade’s most important attraction – the famous medieval Kalemegdan fortress.
